MONITORING IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EARLY GRADE READING
In NWOYA primary school the p1 teacher and the headteacher have been trained in early grade reading methodology. where they are given skills to teach litearcy in local language and english. The skills obtained by the teacher are already been put to practice, where the teacher has collected and made instructional materials which are displayed in classrooms. Selecting children randomly in class also indicated that most of the pupils could read, identify objects and could tell simple stories.
In contrary, a near by school STARTS, PETER'S BWOBOMANAM PRIMARY SCHOOL has both the headteacher and P1 teacher not trained in early grade reade methodology. The teaching methods were teacher centred not child centred, no instructional materials displayed, the few that were displayed were mainly in English. While the teacher was teaching, he mixed both English and Leb Acholi. Basically, the classroom environment was not friendly for the pupils,.
With the comparison, the government should train all teachers in both government and private schools if the learning outcomes are to improve.
